In recent years, the world has witnessed a growing interest in organic farming as an alternative to conventional agricultural practices. Organic farming is an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach that prioritizes the use of natural inputs and techniques, minimizing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms. This farming method emphasizes the preservation of soil fertility, biodiversity, and the well-being of both farmers and consumers. As awareness of the benefits of organic farming increases, governments around the globe have taken supportive steps to promote and encourage its adoption.
One of the key benefits of organic farming lies in its positive impact on human health. Organic crops are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, reducing the risk of chemical residues in food products. Studies have shown that organic fruits, vegetables, and grains have higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, providing consumers with more nutritious options. Additionally, organic livestock farming prohibits the use of growth hormones and antibiotics, ensuring that organic meat, eggs, and dairy products are free from these substances. By consuming organic produce, individuals can make informed choices to protect their health and well-being.
Organic farming is completely based on the natural methods of doing agriculture without using any hazardous substances. This 21st century we completely relied on this hazardous and poisonous substances to get more profitable. But gradually it's decreasing the life expectancy of human and other beings which leads to a major health crisis.
Furthermore, organic farming practices contribute to the preservation of the environment and promote sustainability. Organic farmers prioritize soil health by utilizing natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and composting, which enhance soil fertility and structure. This approach not only improves the productivity and long-term viability of agricultural land but also reduces soil erosion and water pollution caused by chemical runoff. Organic farmers also embrace biodiversity by creating habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife, thereby fostering a balanced ecosystem. These efforts help maintain a healthy and resilient environment for future generations.
Till today some used traditional methods in farming and get profits but not at a vast scale. why?
i think, 1- lack of government support.
2- lack of publicity.
3- low productivity for a short period, but increases in the long run.
4- lack of adequate knowledge. etc.
Recognizing the numerous benefits of organic farming, governments worldwide have implemented supportive measures to encourage its adoption and expansion. One such step is the provision of financial incentives and subsidies for organic farmers. These initiatives help reduce the economic barriers associated with the transition from conventional to organic farming, making it a more viable option for farmers. Governments may also offer tax breaks or grants to support the establishment of organic farms and the implementation of organic certification programs.
To ensure the credibility and integrity of organic products, governments have developed stringent organic certification standards. These standards establish guidelines for organic farming practices, including soil management, pest and disease control, and livestock welfare. Governments work closely with certification bodies to conduct regular inspections and audits, ensuring that organic farms adhere to the prescribed standards. By maintaining the integrity of the organic label, governments provide consumers with reliable information and confidence in the organic products they purchase.
In addition to financial and certification support, governments promote organic farming through education and research. Other advantages and initiatives:-
(i) Enhanced Soil Health: Organic farming practices, such as the use of organic fertilizers and compost, promote the development of healthy and fertile soils. These practices enrich the soil with organic matter, improve its structure, and increase its water-holding capacity. As a result, organic farms are better equipped to withstand drought conditions and have reduced soil erosion rates.
(ii) Reduction of Chemical Exposure: Organic farming significantly reduces the use of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This not only minimizes the exposure of farmers and farmworkers to harmful chemicals but also prevents the contamination of water bodies and surrounding ecosystems. By choosing organic products, consumers can contribute to a healthier environment and reduce the risk of pesticide residues in their food.
(iii) Conservation of Water Resources: Organic farming techniques emphasize efficient water management strategies, such as drip irrigation and mulching. These practices help conserve water resources by reducing water evaporation and minimizing runoff. Additionally, organic farming encourages the cultivation of drought-resistant crops and the use of cover crops, which further enhance water retention in the soil.
(iv) Support for Small-Scale Farmers: Organic farming often benefits small-scale farmers by providing them with opportunities to diversify their income and reduce their dependence on expensive external inputs. Organic certification allows farmers to access premium markets and fetch higher prices for their produce. Harmonized organic standards facilitate the global exchange of organic products, ensuring transparency, trust, and consistency for both producers and consumers. These standards also help expand export opportunities for organic farmers and promote fair and sustainable trade practices.
(vii) Organic Farming Education and Awareness: Governments allocate resources to educate farmers, consumers, and the general public about the benefits of organic farming. This includes organizing training programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns to promote the understanding of organic practices, sustainable agriculture, and healthy food choices. By raising awareness, governments empower individuals to make informed decisions and actively support the organic farming movement.
Achievements:- In India, Sikkim is the first state to adopt organic farming and became a 100% organic state. The state govt implemented in a step wise manner from 2003 to 2010, not like the Sri Lankan govt at a single shot. The state govt also provide farmers incentives , credit facilities and helped in the marketing of the products. So within a decade it can easily achieved its target .
But in a larger picture, still it legging behind against the chemical farming. Organic farming reduces the input costs , maintains good soil health, promotes small organisms like earthworms and finally balanced the ecological system.
By adopting this traditional farming we also add on other services like horticulture, sericulture, apiculture, dairy, poultry and fishing etc to boost farmers income. It also maintains good water table and increases the soil retention capacity of water for a longer period of time.
Now it's the time to return to the organics again because we already polluted soil, water and air at the maximum. In near future we have to face major catastrophes like drought, cyclones, earthquakes and famines. Glaciers are melting , sea levels are increasing, species are at the extinction, temperature rises, sea salinity increasing and rainfall gradually decreasing, all these are already happening but still we are neglecting, our govt neglecting and our UN also neglecting. But we don't.
What can we do at an individual level or an organisational level:-
1/ promoting organic products
2/ using their products and supporting organic producers.
3/ Highlighting the benefits of organic products.
4/ Promoting awareness about peoples health.
5/ Providing govt incentives to farmers.
6/ Pressurising on the govt policies against the promotion of chemical use etc.
It is important to recognize that while organic farming offers significant advantages, it also presents certain challenges. These include the initial transition period, higher labor requirements, and potential limitations in yield compared to conventional farming. However, with continued government support, research advancements, and consumer demand, organic farming can overcome these challenges and continue to play a vital role in building a sustainable and resilient agricultural system.
A small step towards, which leads to a healthy world.
